One of the worst things to have to suffer through as a parent is being sick or injured while having responsibility over your children. Although you might not be feeling up to parenting, your little ones still need someone watching over them and taking care of their needs. But if you’re required to stay in bed, being there for your children can be very difficult. So to help make this whole situation a little easier on you, here are three tips for effective parenting when you’re on bed rest due to a personal injury or some type of illness.

Get A Baby Monitor or Walkie-Talkie

When you’re on bed rest, the reasoning behind this form of treatment is likely because you need to be resting and recuperating. One thing that isn’t very conducive to this is to have your kids running all around your room or jumping on the bed you’re in. However, you’ve got to be able to keep an eye on your children somehow. To help with this, Parents.com recommends that you get either a baby monitor or a walkie-talkie or two so you can still be in the know about what your kids are doing without actually having to get out of bed to do so. Especially if you’re able to see what’s happening and communicate with your children directly from your bedroom, like you can through some baby monitors or security systems, you’ll still be able to effectively parent your children from afar.

Try To Keep Your Routines Normal

Having a parent on bed rest is likely going to throw a big wrench in your family’s daily life. This can often cause there to be a lot of stress on your family. So to help keep things functioning as closely to usual as you can, Rhiannon Giles, a contributor to Today.com, suggests that you do everything in your power to keep your family’s routines as normal as possible. Especially when it comes to your kids, try to have them continue eating meals, doing activities, and sleeping at the same times you had these things happening before you were given bed rest.

Find Ways To Reduce Your Own Stress

Being on bed rest can have you feeling helpless and useless as a parent. If you were a working parent, you may not be able to work anymore, which can put financial strain on your family. With all of this stress going around, it can become harder for you to get healthy and heal the way your body needs to. To combat this, Jack Hourigan, a contributor to Today’s Parent, advises that you find ways to reduce your stress. This might mean consuming comical entertainment, having a massage therapist come to your home, or simply indulging in other things that you can enjoy from your bed. By doing this, you’ll be a happier parent and be able to get back to your full parenting duties as quickly as possible.

If you are about to be spending some time on bed rest, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you stay on top of your job as a parent during this difficult time.
