Researchers at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, Japan, have developed a new glass whose resistance is similar to that of steel.

So far they managed to increase the strength of glass by adding alumina (aluminum oxide) to its structure. But it was a process that had a limit: if the amount of alumina is increased, this is crystallized in contact with the mold.

To eliminate this problem, the experts used an aerodynamic levitation furnace, there the “ingredients” of this supervidrio float to join through carbon dioxide lasers.

The applications in the real world are almost endless: mobile unbreakable screens, windows vehicles that are not damaged in the clashes, stronger urban structures, etc.

“We will establish a way to mass produce new material – explained Atsunobu Masuno, assistant professor at the University, the newspaper The Asahi Shimbun . We are trying to commercialize the technology within five years. ”
